DPA adds adventure to amusement park masterplan

UK-based consultancy DP Associates (DPA) has played a major part in the development and creation of a new indoor section of the Adventure Island amusement park in Southend.

Although originally briefed to provide the site masterplan for the £4-5m attraction space – which is intended to enable the park to increase its opening periods and add an all-year-round operational element – DPA also provided assistance in planning the content and layout of the new area, and helped the operator to understand how it should integrate into the normal requirements of the business.

The brief was also extended to include providing masterplanning of the park around the new building to begin to organise sections of the existing park. DPA also detailed the possible internal layout of the indoor area with ideas for the ride and attraction mix within it, while the masterplan additionally allowed on-site architects, local contractors and the in-house team to deliver detailed construction and specification drawings.

“Our experience in park operation and attraction design enabled us to help [Adventure Island] visualise and understand more fully what the new attraction could incorporate and how it could work both as part of the complete park and as a year-round facility,” said DPA managing director Duncan Phillips.

The new indoor facility is scheduled to open in or before February 2015.
